What Tara Thinks….About J.K. Rowlings Recent Statement

The big thing that was trending this weekend was J.K. Rowlings’ comments from a recent interview where she said she regrets putting Hermione and Ron together in the Harry Potter books, and that Hermione should have been with Harry. I’m a little late commenting on this, mostly because I was saving it for this post.

Okay, here’s the thing. I didn’t read the books before the movies came out. My cousin, a big HP fan, did. After the first few movies, I was talking to him about them and made the comment that I hoped that Harry and Hermione ended up together. That’s when my beloved cousin spoiled me to the fact that Hermione and Ron ended up together and Harry got with Ginny. My initial reaction was…WTF? Harry marries Ron’s little sister?

And that was it. That was the extent of my opinion about that.

The thing is, as a writer but, more importantly, also as a reader, I don’t question the creative choices of writers. It is there story to tell how they see fit and who am I to say otherwise. Either I like it or I don’t, but I don’t usually rant about it. Sometimes I do but most of the time I don’t.

And, the Harry Potter books and movies were never about the romance for me to have a strong reaction about it. I watch, and read, for the action and the incredibly world that J.K. created more than the love aspect, which isn’t really a big part of the story. It’s not like Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga (I have a really big problem calling this a saga based on the definition of saga) or the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, where the story is based on the romance aspect. If Bella chose Jacob, Breaking Dawn would’ve been a totally different book, or if Kat and Daemon weren’t drawn together, than the Lux series would also be different. When it came to HP, I don’t see the main story turning out any differently if Harry had been with Hermione or not. Maybe small aspects, but nothing too detrimental. Harry still would’ve had to gone through what he went through to defeat Lord Voldemort.

So, what Tara thinks about the whole Harry/Hermione, Ron/Hermione thing is that it doesn’t really bother me either way. The one thing I do have to say is that I adored the Harry/Hermione friendship, but who’s to say that they couldn’t still have that friendship and end up marrying each other one day.
